Whats the plan? Image Crown Copyright© SECTIONS

THIS SECTION

CoC in conjunction with UKF (Project UK Forces) is working on an MLRS addon.

Among other things, the MLRS will:

bulletBe a true game engine indirect fire weapon.  This means the rockets are unguided, and the launcher will actually launch the rockets on a ballistic course which will land the missile ON the target.
bulletAllow players to designated targets via a laser designator equipped unit.
bulletIncluding a devastating dual purpose war head also known as 'steel rain', capable of leveling entire grid-squares.
bulletAccurate special effects for both the launching of rockets (smoke fire, etc), as well as an accurate war head detonation special effect (errr... smoke, fire, etc).
bulletCreate a 'real' game engine simulation where if you fly in the path of MLRS batteries as they fire, there is a good chance you will suffer friendly fire. (remember the rockets are dumb)  This includes through the launching area, where the rockets travel, through to 500 meters and down from the detonation point.
bulletHopefully not crush everyone's machine.

What CoCMLRS will NOT do:

bulletWill not fire as most OFP units fire.  You cannot hop in as gunner and target something that you can see, as the minimum engagement range will be about 4km (undecided).  The real system considers DANGER CLOSE to be 2km and it will definitely not shoot at anything closer.
bulletMuch of the functionality for manning the MLRS will be automated.  This means that manning it will likely be rather boring after doing it more than once.  As a result, the unit will start out primarily as an AI controlled unit.
bulletIt will not be fun for people who find addons that let you lob 10000 dammage missiles at something 100 meters away 'realistic'.

Again, every effort has been made to make this MLRS realistic in terms of what the OFP game engine provides.

Ongoing credits:

UKMOD's Jonno:  Modeling (you rock)
COC's Dinger: Ballistics Tables, Rocket Flight, and Multiplayer coding (thing hard stuff using math)
COC's Walker: Mystical targeting voodoo and bending the AI to our will.
COC's Jostapo: Special Effects, CPP crapola, Munitions scripting and press agent.

Here are some early screen shots (model is obscured as it is very rough at this point):
